Lifetime of love celebrated
A man never forgets a woman he loves. For Frank Kanarens, his wife Ivy is unforgettable. Married in England after WWII, Frank and Ivy met while serving in the Royal Air Force. A rear gunner on an Avro Lancaster bomber from 1941 to 1945, Frank’s military service included 30 nighttime raids over Germany. Despite dozens of dangerous missions, he beat the odds and survived the war. His reward was marriage to a beautiful woman he found serving in the officers’ mess who gave her wage of 14 shillings a week…

Watching for Falling Stars
Love and stars are similar in one way. They keep you looking up every night. This connection is not lost on Krystyna Sikora, a caregiver to vulnerable residents at Carveth Care Centre where she calls people who fall, Falling Stars. “If a resident falls twice in a 28-day period, they are placed on our Falling Star Program,” says Krystyna, an employee at the home for almost 19 years. Once on the program, a resident is flagged as high-risk for falls. The identification process includes adding a sign to the resident’s…

Nursing with compassion and humour
JoAnn Agius is a nurse who cushions sorrow and celebrates joy. Wrapped in a cardigan on a frigid winter day, her quiet demeanour is a visible contradiction to her riot of vibrant violet hair. “I just like to be different,” she says with a laugh about her changing hair colour. “It’s not a statement. It’s just me.” A member of the nursing team at Carveth Care Centre for approximately 23 years, JoAnn is a fixture at the home where residents flourish from her compassion and care. “The best part of…

For the courage of a soldier and the love of a father
When Vince Blankenborg arrives in Gananoque from British Columbia, he feels relief. Passing through gates marking the heart of the Thousand Islands, the friendly IT specialist knows his father is in a safe place surrounded by people who care about him. Turning on James Street, the young Blankenborg walks into Carveth Care Centre with a smile. “It’s a real sort of comfort because dad’s safe,” says Vince from the retirement/long-term care home he visits twice a year. A resident of Victoria for the past 25 years, Vince travelled home in…

Residents embrace opportunity and strength
Aging is not lost youth, but a new stage of opportunity and strength. Sitting in her room at Carveth Care Centre surrounded by images of her beloved Scotland, Dorothy Kaddie is accomplishing great things at 92 years old. President of the Carveth Resident Council, Dorothy worked with council to give a fleece blanket to every resident in the nursing home this winter. According to Dorothy, the council is composed of residents at Carveth Care Centre who want to support the home and their global village. “They’re beautiful,” the petite Scotswoman…

Vibrant paintings depict drama, elegance and mystery
In her youth, Rose Rautenberg was a world traveller, model and painter. Blessed with beauty, kindness and talent, she was passionate about her art. Now 86 and unable to paint due to poor health, the scenes Rose captured on canvass when she was younger are helping her when she needs it the most. Diagnosed with dementia, Rose has been using art to support the Alzheimer Society of Canada. Select pieces were donated by her family and sold at Carveth Care Centre recently as part of a fundraiser for the national…

Injury prompts life pursuit to heal others
Peter Burgess spends a lot of time thinking about cause and effect. A local Chiropractor and Pedorthist, the friendly doctor is always looking for the source of pain. “I think the biggest trend (today) is people living in pain,” he says when asked about health trends in Gananoque. “It’s a shame, because the sooner you do something about an issue that is bothering you, the easier it is to treat.” A Chiropractor in Gananoque for more than five years and recently a Canadian Certified Pedorthist, Dr. Burgess wants residents and…

A former Director of Care and Administrator with more than 35 years of experience in long-term care—the past ten years at Carveth Care Centre as Assistant Director of Care—Lewis has spent most of her life trying to make people feel appreciated. “I do get passionate about working with seniors, appreciating their experiences and ensuring they continue to have a voice as they age,” she says with a smile about a program she created at Carveth to help staff, volunteers, residents and…
