Our History

The Gibson Family has been providing quality care to communities in the area for more than 50 years, currently moving onto their third generation. Mr. Kingsley Gibson, an industrial engineer, and his wife Mrs. Joyce Gibson, an RN, started a 49 bed home in the town of Seeley's Bay in 1965. Initially, the beds were filled from ex-patients from the Kingston Psychiatric hospital.

In 1971, Mr. and Mrs. Gibson's two sons, Larry and Tim, assumed ownership of the home.

In 1978, the Gibson family moved their Long Term Care home to a new location in Gananoque, Ontario. At this time, Larry and Tim assumed full responsibility for the operation of the home. They purchased the 19 bed license from the existing home in Gananoque and moved their beds from Seeley's Bay to total 68 beds in the new home. In addition to the LTC beds, 40 retirement home beds were included in the new building. Carveth Care Centre was the first dual home in Eastern Ontario.

In approximately 1982, Carveth was awarded an additional 25 beds for the Long Term Care home and the existing home was expanded to provide space for these new beds. The Gibson Family then purchased the nursing home license of two small facilities in Amherstview, Lennox and Addington County, (19 and 23 beds respectively) and combined this with a 38 bed retirement home. In 1986 they added on another 32 beds to the retirement home. In 1994 the Gibson family purchased a 28-bed license which brought the home to 70 Long Term Care beds. This home is known today as the Helen Henderson Care Centre.

In 2006, The Gibson family purchased the license of an additional 10 Long Term Care beds and expanded Carveth Care Centre by 41, 000 square feet. They also increased the retirement home an additional 12 beds. Today Carveth has 104 beds in the Long Term Care Home and 35 beds in the Retirement home. Helen Henderson Care Centre has 102 beds in the Long Term Care home and 70 beds in the retirement home.

Today, Brett Gibson, son of Tim and Donna Gibson, is the administrator for Carveth Care Centre. Brett is a graduate of Saint Mary’s University with his Bachelor of Commerce, Major in Management, and his Human Resource Management Certificate. With his knowledge and abilities, he will be successful in carrying on the family business to the next level. Lisa Gibson, daughter of Tim and Donna Gibson, is Administrator at Helen Henderson Care Centre; Lisa also has her Bachelor of Commerce with a Management major from Saint Mary’s University and is eager to take hold of the family business.

The Gibson Family takes great pride in both of their homes and makes sure everyone feels like part of the family.
