PSW recognized for outstanding work at nursing home
A 25-year-old Personal Support Worker from Gananoque has won a prestigious award by the town’s nursing home.
Manny Belsham is the Employee of the Month for October at Carveth Care Centre, an accredited retirement lodge and long-term care home owned and operated by the Gibson family.
“I’m a bit shocked. I didn’t expect it,” says the friendly man about the award.
A staff member at the home for the past seven years, Manny was selected by residents and staff.
“Manny is always smiling,” says Tanya Evaristo, co-worker. “He will lend a helping hand, no matter what.”
These comments were echoed by others who said Manny has a polite demeanour and is a pleasure to work with.
Asked about his work assisting 104 residents with daily living, Manny admits, “I like it here. I enjoy the residents more than anything. I love interacting with them. I get a kick out of them.”
Originally from Guatemala, Manny moved to Canada with his family in 2003. He is proud of his new country.
“Canada has beautiful, beautiful scenery,” he explains. “Where I come from, we don’t have such beautiful views. It’s also kind of nice to have four seasons instead of two.”
When he’s not at work, Manny enjoys fishing on the St. Lawrence River, outdoor activities such as hiking and helping his friends. He describes himself as easygoing and quiet.
“Manny is fully deserving of this recognition,” says Shelley Bender, Director of Care. “His respectful and unassuming nature is a genuine attribute that makes our residents love having him look after them.”
Speaking from Carveth in the fall of 2018, Manny shares his dreams for the future.
“One day, I want to own a beautiful house and property near the water,” he says kindly. “That would be nice. I would also like to go into nursing. That would be perfect.”
Carveth Care Centre is grateful for the kind and caring attitude of Personal Support Worker Manny Belsham. To learn more about living or working here, please call 613-382-4752.
