It’s a blanket made with love.

That is how Betty Droogh describes the memorial quilt she made for residents who leave Carveth Care Centre for the last time.

A resident of Carveth Retirement Lodge for the past three years, Betty started the three-layer quilt in February 2019. She finished it approximately three months later with the help of her daughter.

“It’s kind of unique, I think,” she explains softly.

Using the dove as a symbol of peace, the blue and white quilt has a dove in each corner and one in the centre with an olive branch in its beak.

“I love the idea that this will drape a resident as they exit the building for the last time,” says the 93-year-old. “It took a lot of patience to finish the quilt. Because of problems with my eyesight, my daughter had to help me finish it. I did the best I could.”

Located in the heart of Gananoque, Carveth Care Centre is grateful for this dignified and respectful way to honour residents.

“The quilt, and what it represents, has been embraced by residents, families and staff,” notes Lynn Vereecken, Assistant Director of Care and a member of the Palliative Care Team.

Residents of the home say the quilt will give them closure and that death is a natural part of life which doesn’t need to be hidden.

“I never dreamed in my life I’d make a quilt like that,” says Betty, proudly. “I felt privileged to make it. It’s just perfect.”

Carveth Care Centre is grateful for the kindness and compassion of Betty Droogh. To learn more about living or working at our home, please call 613-382-4752.
