Judy Covill is having a hard time saying goodbye to her workplace of 34 years.

Looking around Carveth Care Centre in late May 2022, a long-term care home where she has worked as a Health Care Aide since 1988, the 66-year-old smiles sadly as she talks about leaving her work and friends.

“It’s bittersweet,” she acknowledges about her impending retirement on June 3. “I love it here. I love the residents and I love what I do. That’s what’s going to be so hard – the staff is good here. They’re always trying to work together.”

Pausing thoughtfully, she notes, “I’ve worked for three generations of the Gibson family: Kingsley, Tim and Brett. It’s a long time, but I’m ready to retire. I feel like I’ve done a good job over the past 34 years. I’ve cared for the residents.”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Administrator Brett Gibson notes, “Judy mentioned to me that she has worked for all three generations of our family during her time at Carveth. Her passion, commitment, and care for the residents of Carveth over the last 34 years is impeccable. I wish her all the best in retirement, we are really going to miss her here.”

Known for her loyalty and passion, Judy is currently selling her house and moving into an apartment by the water. She was born in Kingston and currently lives in Gananoque.

“Long-term, we plan to see other places and relax; just enjoy the rest of our lives,” she explains about her plans with her husband, Lou, of 28 years. Between them, the couple has four children, 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Asked to describe herself, Judy replies quickly, “Outgoing, but I’m a private person, too. I try to be helpful and give good suggestions.”

When she’s not at work, Judy likes to read, walk and spend as much time as possible outside. She enjoys adventure sports such as skydiving, zip lining white water rafting.

“I’m an outdoor person,” she confirms. “I want to go on a hot air balloon, next. It’s on my bucket list.”

Although excited about this next stage in her life, she knows her last day of work is going to be difficult.

“Coworkers are like brothers and sisters,” she says. “Some of them have been here forever and I’m going to miss them terribly.”

Carveth Care Centre is grateful for the good work of Judy Covill. Residents and staff wish her a long and happy retirement. To learn more about living or working in our home, please call 613-382-4752.
