The Caregiver: An Essential Role
by Jim Taylor
- Our residents are assured of a safe, secure, and comfortable environment, but in a lot of cases, they are separated from their families most of the time. There is scientific evidence that indicates more frequent visits and contacts with families and caregivers, gives rise to more enthusiasm, improved cooperation, and enhanced attitude about life in general.
Some days and nights can be long and lonely, and visits by families, friends, and caregivers can be emotional highlights. Our residents are proud of their families and friends, and delight in sharing their visitor experiences with others.
Helping at meal times is another supportive activity and demonstrates another level of care and interest in our residents' welfare.
Often, our residents may have difficulty in communicating some needs and concerns that they have. Caregivers and visitors can play a key role in discovering and helping to define these issues, and interpreting to staff for their attention. Caregivers and visitors can, and should, be important members of the Carveth health care team, sharing knowledge, and encouraging mental and emotional fitness.
PS: Our June meeting has a new date and time. We hope you can join us!
