Nursing is a labour of love for this RN

Compassion, dedication and an unwavering commitment to residents have earned Rachel Wilson the title of Employee of the Month for June 2026 at Carveth Care Centre.

A Registered Nurse at the home since January 2025, she has quickly become known for her passionate approach to nursing, her strong advocacy for residents and her ability to connect with everyone she meets.

“I love nursing and caring for others,” attests the friendly young woman. “Although not every nursing intervention will heal certain health conditions given their trajectory, knowing I provided the best care possible and prioritized my patients’ needs is what is most important to me in striving for being a good nurse.”

Colleagues describe Rachel as someone who consistently goes above and beyond to ensure residents receive the highest quality care possible. She says she never leaves a concern unresolved and is always searching for solutions to improve outcomes for residents and families alike.

“If there is something I feel my patient is lacking as part of their care, I will not allow myself to complete my shift without a solution or resolution,” she explains.

Rachel’s caring nature extends far beyond clinical care. Known for her warm personality and love of conversation, she enjoys spending time with residents, hearing stories about their lives and building meaningful relationships with families.

“I’ve been told I have an ‘old soul,’” she says kindly. “I love sparking conversations with our residents and hearing their perspectives of life from a different time.”

Her journey into nursing was deeply personal. Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes as a child, Rachel spent much of her early life interacting with healthcare professionals who inspired her to pursue a career in nursing.

“Living with a chronic illness myself, I always wanted to give back to others from a perspective of understanding what it feels like to be the patient,” she said. “That knowledge helps guide the care I provide as a nurse.”

Outside of work, Rachel enjoys spending time with family and friends, travelling between visits with loved ones, walking her dog and staying active through weight training and exercise.

Her long-term goals are rooted in making a difference in the lives of others.

“If I can make one person smile in my day, I feel I’ve done a good job,” she explains. “It creates a healthy mindset for me and makes a difference not only for someone else, but also for myself.”

Rachel also dreams of travelling the world and continuing to expand her health care knowledge, potentially pursuing advanced nursing education in the future.

When asked what she would change if she could rule the world for a day, Rachel focused on addressing poverty, food insecurity and the housing crisis — issues she believes are closely tied to overall health and wellbeing.

Health care worker to retire after 42 years

After more than four decades of compassionate care, a familiar and trusted presence is preparing to say goodbye at Helen Henderson Care Centre.

Laurie Snider, a Personal Support Worker (PSW), is retiring after 42 years of dedicated service, leaving behind a legacy defined not just by longevity, but by deep human connection.

Laurie began her career on May 8, 1984, at a time when the home looked very different from what residents and staff know today. Over the years, she has witnessed remarkable growth and transformation.

“When I started, there was just one reception area. Now there are three,” she recalls. “The lodge had two wings, and now there are four connected by the lounge. Spaces have completely changed, what used to be the boardroom and chapel is now the servery on the long-term care side. Even the Garden View dining room was once the activity room, and hairdressers were located where the offices are today.”

But while the building evolved, the heart of Laurie’s work remained constant.

“What I loved most was taking care of the residents,” she says. “Sitting and talking with them about their lives, comforting them on hard days, and doing little things to make them smile—that’s what mattered.”

Her career also reflects perseverance and personal growth. Nearly three decades into her work, she completed her PSW certification in 2013, a milestone she considers her greatest professional accomplishment.

“I never imagined I’d be here for 42 years,” she admits. “But I owe that to my parents. I grew up in a family business—we were always busy. That work ethic, and a bit of stubbornness, kept me going.”

Colleagues say her dedication has left an indelible mark on both residents and staff. Sue Reynolds, Director of Care, reflected on Laurie’s extraordinary career:

“Laurie is truly an exceptional individual who gave so much of herself to our home. She began her career in the lodge and later transitioned to the long-term care side as a nurse’s aide. At a time when many are preparing for retirement, Laurie chose to return to school to further her education, earning her Personal Support Worker diploma with honours while continuing to work full-time. She has always put residents first and herself last. Now, it’s time for Laurie to focus on herself and enjoy life. It is an incredible achievement to have dedicated 42 years to one home, something we may never see again.

Laurie, we wish you all the wonderful things in life, tenfold, for everything you have given. From the bottom of my heart, enjoy your retirement—and don’t forget the bubble wrap!”

As she steps into retirement, Laurie is looking forward to a quieter, but still fulfilling, chapter. She plans to spend more time with her son and her sister’s family, and has already begun helping with lambing on the farm—something she long promised she would do. She also looks forward to enjoying simple pleasures like jigsaw puzzles and country walks.

Still, leaving won’t be easy.

“I will miss the residents for sure, and the staff I’ve become friends with. There have been so many good times. I have a lot of memories,” she says. “But I’ll be back to visit.”

Laurie’s impact on the care centre community is undeniable. For 42 years, she has been a steady, compassionate presence in the lives of countless residents and families—a role that goes far beyond job description. She will be formally recognized for her years of service at a special presentation in the home’s Fireside Room at 2 pm on Friday, May 15.

As one chapter closes, her legacy of kindness, dedication, and quiet strength will continue to be felt in the halls she helped shape for more than four decades.

Young health care worker from Seeley’s Bay praised

Charlotte Jack isn’t afraid to be empowering and uplifting, values not often seen in a 20-year-old woman.

Speaking from Carveth Care Centre, a long-term care home in Gananoque where she has worked for the past couple of years as a Personal Support Worker (PSW), Charlotte talks with enthusiasm about her work to help others.

“I’m passionate about helping to care for people,” says the friendly woman in early 2026. “I’m planning to go to Ghana this October for three weeks with my uncle on a humanitarian mission to administer vaccines and provide healthcare checks. I’m looking forward to it.”

A Christian who matches her commitments to her convictions, Charlotte is enjoying her work helping residents at the popular family owned and operated home in Gananoque.

“It’s good,” she says with smile about her job providing frontline healthcare to 104 residents in long-term care. “I really like connecting with the residents and hearing their stories, they keep us on our toes. I also like moving around the home and experiencing different aspects of the job. I’m grateful for good coworkers like Palak and Regan. At some point in my life, I’d like to return to school to study Medical Radiation Technology.

Known for her patience and compassion towards residents, Charlotte is the home’s Employee of the Month for April 2026.

“Charlotte is an exceptional PSW who consistently provides high-quality resident-focused care and is a trusted advocate for residents’ comfort, dignity, and well-being,” attests Trish Hornbeck, Assistant Director of Care. “Her warm approach and unwavering dedication to our residents makes her a valuable member of our Carveth team.”

Asked to describe herself, Charlotte says she is loving and caring.

“I’m a Christian,” she explains. “I think I get a lot of that from my faith. I also have a brother with special needs who was part of the reason I got into healthcare.”

“This world isn’t always kind to those who are different,” she says wisely. “I’d like to change that.”

When she’s not at work, Charlotte can be found enjoying the outdoors in the summer and playing video games in the winter.

If you could rule the world, what would you do on day one?

“Everyone deserves to have basic necessities such as food, shelter and consideration. I’d provide that.”

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

“Teleportation. It would be convenient.”

If you weren’t at your current job, what would you be doing?

“I’d probably be a nanny. I love working with little kids. They’re a lot of fun.”

Man and His Dog Bring Comfort to Amherstview Residents

Over the last few years, visits to a long-term care home in Amherstview by an elderly man and his dog have generated more than just happiness for the residents and staff who greet them. It brings purpose and meaning to the man and animal who visit.

“I look forward to my visits to the home with Josie,” says Alan Harrison, an 88-year-old Amherstview man who brings his four-year-old rescue dog, Josie, to Helen Henderson Care Centre three days a week. “If I’m every unable to make it, I miss not going. It’s become a way of life. It’s good for me and Josie.”

Speaking from his home in late February 2026, Alan was a regular visitor to Helen Henderson where his wife, Jean, resided from 2013 to 2016. After her death, he loved the home and its people so much, he continued to return.

“I just kept coming,” he says with a kind smile. “It seemed like the right thing to do. Josie is all I have got; I don’t have any family. The home has become my family.”

Loved by the residents and staff, Alan and Josie’s visits are the highlight of the day for many. The two arrive with a smile and a wagging tail. The handler greets everyone by name, showing patience and genuine interest. Often watching them is Activation Director Donna Joudoin who can’t say enough about the joyful pair.

“Alan has been a family member, as well as a volunteer, for many years at our home,” explains Donna. “He brings Josie here a couple of times a week through our pet therapy program which is incredibly meaningful because it enhances everyone’s quality of life. Alan and Josie bring comfort and companionship to our residents, families and staff who are always so happy to see them. Pet therapy is important because it sparks memories and encourages conversation. Pet therapy also reduces anxiety and loneliness and offers emotional support. It is a great person-centred program. Alan often jokes that he is not sure who people are happier to see, him or Josie. We always let Alan know that they both bring great joy to our home”

“They love Josie,” Alan says with a laugh when asked about his beautiful pet. “There’s something about a dog. They keep you going and they love you unconditionally.

Alan admits the two look forward to visiting the home every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

“I have great respect for the staff,” says the kind man. “This is a good place to be. You’re well looked after here.”

Exploring the Mystery and Wonder of Different Cultures and Countries

A Canadian long-term care home is expanding its physical and imaginative borders with a program that teaches the mystery and wonder of different cultures and countries.

Called Culture Club, the program is catching the attention of residents and staff who see it as a platform to highlight the many cultures represented at Carveth Care Centre, a retirement lodge and long-term care home in Gananoque, Ontario.

“The home’s Activation Department is using this program to give residents the chance to learn about, and appreciate, different cultures through meaningful social, sensory and educational experiences,” says Shannon Buell, department manager. “There is a diverse number of cultures in our home represented by both residents and staff. Culture Club is proving to be a meaningful way to promote cultural awareness and understanding.”

Standing before more than two dozen residents at the home in mid-February 2026, Activity Aide Rachel talks about a trip to Alaska by resident Duane and his wife Carol in June 2007.

Sitting beside her husband as the home discussed the people and places she and her husband encountered during their two-week voyage over the inside passage aboard the Norwegian Sun, Carol smiles at the fond memories.

“It was wonderful,” says Carol when asked about her trip. “It was fun. We saw some beautiful country.”

Sitting nearby in a chair listening to the presentation is Peggy, another resident of the home who travelled to Alaska when she was younger.

“It was nice,” says Peggy about Alaska, the 49th and largest US state that is home to Kodiak bears and boasts dog sledding as its state sport.

A proud Canadian who has travelled to 41 countries, she notes, “It was unspoiled and beautiful.”

Nursing isn’t just a job for Leo Candorna. It is a calling driven by a desire to help others. For him, it’s a labour of love.

“My father wanted me to be a lawyer,” says the friendly man, thinking thoughtfully of how he became a Registered Practical Nurse. “I wasn’t interested in health care, at first, but that quickly changed when I began to study it. It didn’t take me long to realize I was meant to be a nurse.”

Born in the Philippines, Leo, 36, arrived in Canada in 2019. He began working at Helen Henderson Retirement Lodge in Amherstview in March 2020 as an agency nurse. In early January 2026, he decided to join the home as a full-time nurse for the regular work schedule, benefits and job security.

“I love the people here,” replies Leo when asked his decision to leave agency work and join the popular family owned and operated retirement lodge. “I fell in love with the residents. I’m very content here. I love my Helen Henderson team.”

Married with a four-year-old son, Leo brings positive energy to the home that made him its Staff Spotlight for February 2026.

“Leo is an excellent nurse who cares deeply about the residents in his care,” explains Erin Woodcox, Lodge Manager. “We have wanted him to join our team since he arrived through the nursing agency five years ago. We are thrilled to have him as a member of our staff, now. His compassion, kindness, patience and knowledge make him a valued member of our team.”

Pleased with the feedback, Leo says with his trademark humour he wasn’t sure the lodge would want him due to his constant singing.

“I love to sing,” he says with a grin. “I’m always doing karaoke in the home.”

Asked to describe himself, Leo says he loves outdoor activities such as hiking. This winter, he has been enjoying tobogganing and skiing. When he’s not at work, he can be found spending time with his family, enjoying special activities on Saturday and attending church on Sunday.

Looking ahead, Leo would like to continue his nursing education, perhaps leading to a specialization. He also hopes to have more children.

Questions for Leo

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

“To heal the pain of the people in my care. I see people with everything from arthritis, headaches and cancer. Pain is one of the most awful things we can experience. I’d like to remove it and make people free of pain.”

If you weren’t at your current job, what would you be?

“A frustrated lawyer. My father wanted me to be one, but I fell in love with nursing. My brother is a lawyer.”

If you could rule the world, what would you do on day one?

“There is a lot going on in the world. I’d like people to have understanding, love and peace. I believe it starts at home and in the workplace. I’m longing for peace on Earth.”

Carveth Resident Makes Tokens of Love

Ask someone why they crotchet, and they might laugh and tell you it keeps them from unraveling.

Smiling from her room at Carveth Care Centre, a long-term care home in Gananoque, Madelene Wood loves to crotchet between meals and activities. She is 96 and has lived at the popular home for almost a year. Before she arrived, she was a dedicated volunteer for 34 years.

“I love it here,” says Madelene. “The meals are good and the activities are fun. I enjoy the music, bingos and movies. When I’m not doing something here, crocheting gives me something to do.”

A familiar face around the home, Madelene’s crocheted decorative pins can be seen everywhere during a holiday. Most staff wear her Santa heads, and many have red and white hearts for Valentine’s Day. Today, on a cold winter day in early 2026, Madelene is working on pink rabbits for Easter.

Asked if she has other designs in the works, she points to all the handmade snowmen in gift bags around her and says with a smile, “I don’t have time for anything else.”

Madelene’s room is clean and tidy. She opens her footstool to reveal its hiding place for the many yarn balls needed for her pins.

Speaking on behalf of the home, Activity Director Shannon Buell notes, “When new staff arrive, Madelene always stops in to the office to make sure they have her collection of pins. It’s so nice to see her kindness spreading to the volunteers, residents and their families.”

Helping Is Its Own Kind of Magic for This Nurse Practitioner

Leanne Wakelin finds magic in helping others.

Speaking from Helen Henderon Care Centre, a long-term care home in Amherstview where she has worked for the past four years as a Nurse Practitioner, Leanne finds deep satisfaction and pleasure in helping others.

Named the home’s Staff Spotlight for January 2026, Leanne is known for her kindness, compassion and excellence as a nurse.

“I have been a Nurse Practitioner for 13 years and a nurse for 41 years,” explains the friendly woman. “I truly enjoy my job at Helen Henderson Care Centre (HHCC). I enjoy the team I work with and getting to know the residents. The best part is working to improve the quality of life for people as much as possible.”

Asked about her job, Leanne says she finds one part particularly challenging. “The most challenging part of my job is ensuring the treatments and medications I prescribe actually improve the resident’s life and do not cause untoward side effects that make things worse,” she explains. “This means ensuring I follow-up with the resident and make sure they feel they are improving. I think something that may surprise people is how little it takes to make someone happy. Residents, like the rest of us, want to be listened to and heard and know you are doing your best for them. I do not always have the right answer, but I feel working with the resident, families and the physician staff we can work towards the best answer.”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Director of Care Sue Reynolds notes, “Leanne is an amazing addition to our medical team. Her knowledge of our residents and families is extraordinary. Leanne actively listens to our residents and families to ensure they are heard and then provides the best care possible. Her teaching capacity for our staff to enhance their knowledge is second to none. We are so incredibly blessed to have the amazing experience and extensive knowledge Leanne brings to our home along with her passion for caring.”

Gananoque Teenager Celebrates Workplace Award

2025 was a good year for Zoey Tremblay.

Only 19 years old, this Gananoque woman found her purpose in health care, was accepted to nursing school and earned her first workplace award.

Speaking from Carveth Care Centre, a long-term care home in Gananoque in late 2025, Zoey talks about her work at the family owned and operated home for the past six months as a Personal Support Worker.

“I love it here,” says the teenager with a smile. “The residents are all so great. I also like my coworkers. The people here are very nice, especially management.”

Known for her good work, Zoey is the home’s Employee of the Month for January 2026.

“Zoey is a valued member of our Nursing Department,” says Assistant Director of Care, Trish Hornbeck. “Although she’s a fairly new PSW, she is already very good at her job. We can already tell Zoey is going to be a wonderful nurse.”

Grateful for the feedback, Zoey admits, “I know health care is where I should be because I like to feel needed and to take care of people who can’t take of themselves.”

A graduate of St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Brockville and the PSW program at Algonquin College in Ottawa, Zoey is registered to attend the RPN program at the Brockville Campus, St. Lawrence College.

When she is not at work helping 104 residents in long-term care, Zoey is studying or planning her wedding scheduled for June 2027. She also likes to spend time with family and cares for her pet leopard gecko named Viper.

“I’m kind of working a lot right now. I don’t have a lot of free time,” she says with a smile.

Asked to describe herself, Zoey uses words such as happy, talkative and reliable.

“I’m always here on time,” she says proudly.

Warmth and Laughter Radiate from This Laundry Room

More than clean clothes are generated in the laundry room at Helen Henderson Care Centre in Amherstview. When April Jordan is there, it’s full of laughter and lighthearted fun.

A member of the Housekeeping and Laundry Department at the popular retirement lodge and long-term care home for the past 22 years, April can often be heard before she is seen.

“Our department is fun. We’re welcoming to other people,” says the 47-year-old with her trademark smile and laugh. “Personally, I try to spread a lot of happiness and joy. This is our residents’ home, and they don’t want misery. Why not make them smile, if we can.”

Known for her energy, compassion and good sense of humour, April can always be counted on to show up for work and participate in theme days. “It’s nice when we involve the residents,” she explains about the programs and activities regularly planned for residents and staff, including her sister who works as a Personal Support Worker in the Nursing Department.

Married with two adult children, April lives in Bath and enjoys her job.

“I love it here,” she confirms. “It’s my second family. I like everything about this place. I enjoy my work to ensure residents receive clean laundry. I’m very particular.”

Talking while folding a bin of shirt savers in late November, April admits she appreciates the recognition as the home’s Staff Spotlight for December 2025. She is so good at her job, she doesn’t look at name tags as she folds clothes and places them in racks for transportation back to rooms. She knows how to remove ink stains with hairspray and warns of the impossibility of removing crayons and lipstick from clothing.

“Clothes are important to the residents and families,” April explains. “I like to ensure drawers are organized neatly and clothes are clean and well cared for. It helps that I work with a great group of people.”

When April is not at work, she can be found enjoying our warm Canadian summers at her trailer on O’Reilly Lake in Parham. She describes herself as happy, energetic, bubbly and slightly crazy in a positive and happy way.

“I don’t think I could ask for a better team than we have here,” she says thoughtfully about the workforce that cares for, and supports, the home’s approximately 170 residents. “I like to do a lot of extras for people. I will even help on the floor if I’m needed.”

Asked about her dreams and goals, April says she wants to travel because she’s never been out of Canada.

“I’m going somewhere before I die,” she says with conviction.

Retirement Home Celebrates Good Work of New Nurse

Mahi Patel is a new nurse with an old soul.

Only 23 years old and two months into her first job, she has already impressed the residents and staff at the Gananoque retirement home where she provides front-line health care.

“I enjoy it here. People are so nice,” says the friendly nurse. “I do ask a lot of questions. Joe, the manager, is good at answering them.”

Speaking from Carveth Retirement Lodge on a cold November afternoon, Mahi smiles brightly at the news she is the home’s Employee of the Month for December 2025.

“Mahi is an asset to our home,” says Joe Classen, Lodge Manager. “She provides excellent health care to our residents. She is warm, kind and compassionate. We are grateful for her time and talent.”

Pleased with the feedback, Mahi is taking pleasure in the success of her first nursing job. Earlier this year, she moved to Gananoque from Kitchener after arriving in Canada from India in May 2024.

Asked about the differences between the two countries, Mahi admits she likes the space and calmness in Canada. She also likes the snow when it falls softly and doesn’t turn to ice. She is looking forward to attending her first Santa Claus parade.

“People are so nice here. Everyone is polite,” she says about Canadians who she feels are polite in the way they talk.

Asked to describe herself, Mahi, who is a Registered Nurse working as a Registered Practical Nurse, says she is caring and curious. As a nurse, Mahi finds satisfaction in research and evidence-based practices. “There’s a difference between books and real life,” she says wisely about her school years and her current role as a front-line health care professional.

“I try to be kind to everyone and myself. I also talk a lot,” she says with a laugh. “Some people like it, some people not-so-much.”

When she’s not at work, Mahi enjoys cooking and watching Instagram reels.

“This is a beautiful world. Why would I change it? In fact, you can’t change how people make decisions.”

New PSW Appreciates Warmth of Carveth Family

Kaycee Tulod left her family and friends behind in the Philippines in 2023 for a new life in Canada. What she found two years later is a fulfilling career and people who care about her.

Speaking from Carveth Care Centre at the end of her shift as a Personal Support Worker in late October, Kaycee smiles brightly at the news she is the home’s Employee of the Month for November 2025.

“I really like it,” says the 26-year-old Gananoque woman when asked about her life in Canada and work at Carveth Care Centre, a popular retirement lodge and long-term care home in Gananoque.

“It feels like my home now,” says Kaycee. “I’m all alone here in Canada. The residents and staff at Carveth have become my family. I love my work and appreciate the teamwork with my coworkers. It’s become my home here in Canada. It’s a very big thing, and blessing to me, to be at Carveth.”

Before she arrived in Canada, Kaycee completed one-year of law school in the Philippines. She decided to travel to Canada because she loves to explore and be independent.

“I just liked the country,” she says when asked why she choose to move to this country. “I thought to myself, why not. At first, I found it challenging to be in Canada. But now, it’s much better and I’m liking the health care field. I love wintertime and the snow.”

Asked to describe herself, Kaycee replies, “I’m a pretty bubbly person. I’m always reliable and consistent at my job.”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Assistant Administrator Trish Hornbeck notes, “Kaycee is a valued member of our Carveth family. She consistently demonstrates exceptional dedication, reliability, and compassion to the residents she cares for. Kaycee’s warmth, patience, and kindness are evident in every interaction, whether resident, staff, family, or visitor. She shines in her role, and we at Carveth are incredibly grateful for the positive impact she has on those she serves.”

In addition to her work as a PSW, Kaycee is part of the home’s Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO) team, a provincial initiative designed to provide short-term, intensive support for adults with responsive behaviors related to conditions like dementia, mental illness, or other neurological disorders. The team works with residents and their families, and their care partners to create person-centered strategies that help manage behaviors, improve quality of life, and support caregivers.

When she’s not at work, Kaycee can be found camping, running errands or spending time with friends. Her dream is to stay in the health care field and continue to serve the residents at Carveth, perhaps as a nurse.

She notes about her workplace award, “I’m very grateful. I don’t know what I did to deserve it because I’m just doing a job that I love. I’m happy they can see my hard work. I’m so happy.”

Amherstview Woman Turns School Placement Into Fulfilling Job

A Personal Support Worker (PSW) has won her first workplace award.

Rajdeep Kaur smiles at the news she is the Employee of the Month at Helen Henderson Care Centre, a popular retirement lodge and long-term care home in Amherstview where she has worked as a PSW for the past seven months.

“I did my placement here when I was attending St. Lawrence College,” explains the friendly 30-year-old. “I like it here and I’m grateful the home gave me an opportunity after placement.”

Known for her reliability and friendliness, Rajdeep is currently studying to become a Registered Practical Nurse. She arrived in Canada from India in 2017 to study business administration. She is currently juggling work, nursing school and the care of her 18-month-old son.

“It’s been great,” says the Amherstview woman about her time in Canada. “I like it so far.”

Rajdeep joins her sister in the Nursing Department which provides frontline health care to 104 residents in long-term care. She says she appreciates the staff unity and good teamwork.

Speaking on behalf of the home, Assistant Director of Care Melissa Locke notes, “Raj has been a wonderful addition to the team. She has a calm quiet confidence about her. Residents and staff alike enjoy her friendly company when she is here. “

Asked to describe herself, Rajdeep says she has a loving nature and enjoys visiting new places and trying new food.

“I keep busy with my little boy,” she says with a smile. “Once school is finished, I would like a daughter.”

Rajdeep’s dream include returning to India every few years with her family to enjoy the food and celebrations.

Home Names New Lodge Manager

Carveth Retirement Lodge has a new manager.

Joe Classen, 32, of Lyn, was named to the role last month (September 2025). He follows Phyllis Lorbetskie who retired in July 2025.

Currently working in the lodge as a Registered Practical Nurse, Joe is delighted with the promotion. “I’m excited and nervous at the same time because it’s a new role,” he says with a smile. “I’m grateful I have experienced managers here who I can turn to for guidance and support.”

Part of Carveth Care Centre, the retirement lodge has 34 rooms. It is half of Carveth Care Centre which also has a 104-bed long-term care (LTC) home. Joe started his career in LTC more than 10 years ago as a Personal Support Worker at Carveth. He earned his nursing license in 2021 and began working in the lodge as a nurse.

Speaking on behalf of the home, Administrator Brett Gibson notes, “I want to start by thanking, and showing my family’s gratitude to, Phyllis Lorbetskie for all the years of service she has provided to our home. She will be greatly missed. Replacing Phyllis was never going to be easy, but after several conversations and applications, the one name that kept coming back to us was Joe Classen. Joe fits our home’s values and was mentored by Phyllis. He understands residents needs and puts them at the forefront. We are going to help Joe into this new position, and we know he is going to work hard with our residents/staff on the lodge side.”

Asked what he brings to the role, the friendly man notes, “I bring a positive attitude, brevity and passion for maintaining the high standards this home is known for. I’m already familiar with the residents and staff which will help me answer their questions. I have always enjoyed this place and its people. It’s home.”

Looking thoughtful, Joe notes with sincerity, “I always loved how Phyllis ran the home. I don’t plan to change anything right away. My focus is to provide assisted daily living in a clean, comfortable and safe environment. I want to continue to ensure people are happy and healthy while preserving dignity and promoting independence. If the residents are happy, I’m happy.”

Former Lodge Manager Phyllis Lorbetskie notes, “I’d like to congratulate Joe on the advancement of his career by accepting the lodge manager position. I found it to be a very rewarding role. It is an additional step in the nursing department, providing an open avenue to learning and applying new skills. If you have any questions, Joe, I am always by your side to help and provide feedback and assistance. Best of luck in the future ahead. I know you will do an amazing job!”

Married with two children, Joe is particularly grateful for this positive change in his professional life due to a recent stroke of bad luck in his personal life. Joe suffered a house fire last May that destroyed most of his personal belongings.

“The rebuild starts the end of this month,” he says happily. “We’re hoping to be in by the end of November or early December. It will be nice to be back into my own house again. In the meantime, I’m grateful for the warm embrace of my Carveth family.”

Amherstview Woman Celebrated

A dishwasher at a long-term care home in Amherstview has been named Employee of the Month for October 2025.

Speaking from Helen Henderson Care Centre where she has worked for the past two years as a dishwasher, Anna Amey smiles brightly at the news of her workplace award.

“I wasn’t expecting it,” says the 25-year-old Amherstview woman. “What an honour.”

Known for her hard work, Anna says she enjoys her job at the sink in the back of the busy kitchen.

“It’s good,” she says with a smile when asked about her job cleaning dishes, silverware and pots & pans.

“Some days can feel overwhelming due to the large volume of dirty dishes, but it’s mostly manageable which makes for the workday to go by fast.”

Other than babysitting when she was younger, this is Anna’s first job. When she’s not working, she can be found at home playing with her two dogs or reading.

Asked to describe herself, she uses words such as kind, positive and easy to get along with. She dreams of travelling to Walt Disney World in Florida.

Anna smiles when asked if she has any tips on how to deal with dishpan hands. “Use lotion,” she says kindly. “Also, if you let dishes soak, they’ll require less scrubbing and elbow grease.”

Retired Workers Return to Hill Island, Marvel at Changes

It is a different type of life when you live on the majestic St. Lawrence seaway. Terms such as river rats, lock masters and fishing guides are common in the communities perched along its shore. Just as common are the people who maintain the infrastructure that spans the seaway and connect the two nations to the north and south.

Known as the Thousand Islands Bridge - a series of five bridges over the St. Lawrence River that extend from Collins Landing near Alexandria Bay, New York to Ivy Lea near Gananoque, Ontario - the system covers 13.6 kilometres and is intercepted by the US and Canada border control agencies. It is owned and operated by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority.

Opened 87 years ago, the bridge system and Canadian customs/immigration service have been staffed since inception by locals who look on it with pride.

“When people think of the 1000 Islands, they think of the bridge,” says Kelsey Sherboneau from a bus carrying people who helped maintain the bridges, border crossing, grounds and gift shop on Hill Island that houses part of the bridge system that connects Canada to the United States.

Retired after years of hard work on the island, the bus passengers are residents of Carveth Care Centre, a retirement lodge and long-term care home in Gananoque where Kelsey works in the Recreation Department. She helped arrange this outing in August 2025 to show the seniors how Hill Island has changed since they retired.

“I wouldn’t say it was hard work,” says Bill Gibson, a local resident who painted the bridges for more than 40 years. “But if I had to do it over again, I would have taken a heavy blanket to lay on. It’s where I developed rheumatoid arthritis.”

Reluctant to join the outing at first, Bill is clearly enjoying himself after he enters the 1000 Islands Tower, a platform on the island that overlooks the river and bridges that Bill started painting when he graduated high school until he retired at 65. “It’s all different now, it’s very modern,” he reminisces. There are also more trees on the island. When I wasn’t painting the bridge, I drove the snowplow for the bridge in the winter. It was good, busy work. One thing that hasn’t changed is the paint colour. The bridges are still that nice green.”

Joining Bill on today’s excursion is Jim Foote who worked as a custodian for the bridge authority. He remembers sleeping in the office one night when bad weather closed the bridge. On the way to the island, his wife Christine indicated where Jim proposed marriage in Landon’s Bay.

Pointing to an abandoned building on the island that has fallen into disrepair, Barbara Powell, another resident of Carveth Care Centre, notes, “I worked at Stradford’s gift shop for 20 years. I remember the line for fishing licenses was always long. People bought lot of everything.”

Watching quietly from his wheelchair, Bruce Leakey can see the sleek new border crossings and customs buildings that have replaced the buildings where he used to work as a customs officer. His health prevents him from finding the words to describe the changes before him, but it makes you wonder what stories he would tell about his career welcoming people to Canada. Or, as it’s known to locals, The Great White North.

Home Bids Fond Farewell to Retiring Staff

Saying goodbye is never easy. Just ask two staff who retired last month with nearly 60 years of health care experience between them.

“I loved my job. I found it very rewarding,” explains Sheila Harrison, a member of the Housekeeping Department at Helen Henderson Care Centre who retired in August 2025 after 24 years of service. “When I left work at the end of the day, I was proud of what I had accomplished.”

Located in Amherstview, Helen Henderson Care Centre is a popular retirement lodge and long-term care (LTC) home for approximately 170 residents. Sheila is one of two staff members who retired that month. The other is Penny Cunningham, a Personal Support Worker (PSW) who has worked at the home for more than 35 years.

“It’s a mixed feeling,” says Penny about her plans. “It’s sad because I will miss the residents and staff who have become friends. A resident started crying when they heard I was leaving which was touching. I have enjoyed my time in health care, but I am also looking forward to spending more time sewing, baking, quilting and babysitting.”

Penny talks about her time at the home with pride and nostalgia. She started as a Nurse’s Aide in 1990 and then trained as a Health Care Aide. Her title was changed to PSW when Health Care Aides were grandfathered into a new system. Now 68 years old, the proud mother of three children and six grandchildren calls her retirement bittersweet.

“Some days I’m okay with my decision to retire, other days I’m sad that it’s coming to an end,” she admits. “It’s the right decision for me. I’ve leaving with my health, a lot of good memories and pride in a job well-done.”

“All-in-all, I’m happy with my work and my career,” she continues. “When I started, I was only looking for part-time work. It quickly became a full-time job that I enjoyed. It’s rewarding to be a PSW, you learn a lot. I’m grateful to the home for the opportunity to work here. It gave me a reason to get up in the morning. People needed me.”

Asked about advice she would share with new front line health care workers, she notes, “Try to be understanding of the residents and to take their feelings into consideration. An issue might be minor to you, but it’s big to them. Also, try to enjoy your job. LTC residents have a lot to teach you.”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Administrator Lisa Gibson notes, “Penny should be proud of her ability to connect with residents and their families over the past 35 years. Her name is often spoken with praise and admiration by our residents and their loved ones, which is telling of her compassion. I would like to wish Penny all the best in her well-deserved retirement.”

This sentiment is echoed by the home’s Director of Care, Sue Reynolds, who says, “We wish Penny well on her new adventure and hopes she takes some well-deserved time for herself and to enjoy her amazing family. Her many years with us have shown what a big heart Penny has, and she will leave a big void for many here at the home. Happy quilting, Penny!”

A few years younger than Penny at 64 years old, Sheila doesn’t embrace retirement like Penny. Recent health issues forced the friendly woman to make the change.

“This is not how I wanted to go out, at all,” Sheila admits. “My mind says I’m young enough and can do the job, but my body says no. I have shed a lot of tears over this because I felt connected to the residents. I didn’t want to leave this way. I’m going to miss the residents and staff.”

Sheila admits she doesn’t have any plans for her retirement because the concept is still new to her, and she is still trying to figure it out.

“I have no plans right now,” she says. “I’m just going day-to-day and trying to get my health back on track.”

“It’s hard to believe we are also saying goodbye to Sheila Harrison in Housekeeping this month,” adds the administrator. “Shelia took pride in her work and went above and beyond to ensure our home was clean, tidy, and impeccably maintained. I am saddened that her retirement plans arose out of health issues. I hope she can find rest and enjoyment in her hard-earned retirement years. She will be greatly missed.”

“Sheila has been a fixture on Joyce Faye Terrace since it opened,” adds Sue. “Her dedication to the home, staff and residents are valued. Sheila wore her heart on her sleeve. Even at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when we had to wear masks, her smile always lit up the home. We wish Shelia a wonderful and relaxing retirement!

This Health Care Professional Moved from UK to Canada to Start a New Life

Dani Antrobus took a leap of faith when she uprooted her family in 2024 and moved from England to Canada to start a new life.

It was a gamble that paid off.

Reflecting on the past 18 months in her new country, Dani smiles at the memories of her jump across the pond.

“I was born in Liverpool and moved to North Wales when I was still a child,” she says nostalgically about her life in England. “I do miss the United Kingdom, sometimes. I like the fact that it’s green in Ontario and there are a lot of beautiful lakes. I’m only seen a small part of this country, but from what I’ve seen so far, Canada is gorgeous.”

Dani’s start in Canada was a bit rocky when she first arrived due to the Canada Post strike. She moved here with her husband and three of their five children, the two eldest remaining behind to finish their studies.

“We arrived in February, and my personal items didn’t arrive until December,” she says with laugh. “It’s starting to settle down now, but I still have things in boxes.”

Asked about the differences between the two countries, she quickly answers, “Milk comes in bags here and the sky is always blue. In the UK, it’s always grey; it’s quite depressing. There’s also a language barrier in terms of colloquialisms that don’t translate. That’s a big difference.”

Dani worked as a Registered Nurse before arriving in Canada. The move was her husband’s dream to work as an engineer in Canada. Shortly after they arrived, Danie landed a job as a Personal Support Worker (PSW) at Helen Henderson Care Centre in Amherstview. She is currently working to earn her license to work as a nurse in Canada.

Speaking from the popular long-term care home in late July 2025 where she has worked as a PSW for the past 10 months, Dani notes, “I enjoy my work in health care. I like people, and I love to hear stories about their lives. I’ve been doing this job for 27 years and I have never met someone who didn’t have an interesting life or story to share. I remember caring for a woman who worked on the Enigma machine, a cipher device used by Nazi Germany during World War II to encrypt and decrypt messages. I also nursed a nuclear physicist. They were so interesting.”

The 44-year-old woman stops and notes with enthusiasm, “One of our residents here was a pilot.”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Director of Care Sue Reynolds notes, “We are extremely fortunate that Dani found her way across the pond to our home. She has a dynamic personality that brings out the best in our residents and her attention to detail creates a long-lasting impact for all.”

When she’s not at work, Dani can be found walking two miles a day, boating or swimming. Asked to describe herself, she says she is an empath who likes to give back. “Health care is where I can do that,” she explains.

“This is the job I choose to do. Nursing is my make-a-wish job. Before this, I was a barmaid. If it wasn’t nursing, I’d probably be refurbishing furniture., I love working with wood and antiques.”

Gananoque Cook Welcomes Change of Pace

Chris Giugovaz has enjoyed a direct improvement to his quality of life since he stopped working in the fast-paced world of restaurants for the kitchen in a long-term care home and retirement lodge.

Speaking from Carveth Care Centre where he has worked as a head cook for more than four years, Chris talks about cooking three meals a day for approximately 150 people.

“I like it,” says the friendly 37-year-old about his job in early July 2025. “The hours and atmosphere are a total change from restaurants. I consider this one of the most relaxing places I’ve ever worked. It’s better.”

Known for his reliability and creative meals, Chris is the home’s Staff Spotlight for August 2025. His work has been appreciated since he started with the home shortly after the COVID pandemic started in March 2020.

“I came here during the COVID pandemic when everything was shut down,” says Chris who served as the head chef at several Gananoque restaurants. “This kind of cooking is comparable to catering where everything is served at once, opposed to table-to-table service in restaurants.”

Asked about his specialty, Chris smiles and references his Italian background and how he enjoys making handmade pasta and anything to do with fish or seafood. When he goes out to eat, he enjoys places like the Purple House in Gananoque, Tango or AquaTerra in Kingston.

Asked about the future, Chris admits he’s here to stay.

“I don’t have any plans of going anywhere,” he says with a chuckle. “I’m happy here, right now. I like having holidays for a change.”

He is also looking forward to the new kitchen that is to be included in the building’s retrofit. “It’s going to be a nice kitchen when it’s done.”

When he’s not at work, Chris sometimes moonlights as a cook on weekends. He enjoys golfing, hunting, fishing and working as a referee at a local paintball field.

“All things I didn’t have time to do when I was working in restaurants,” he explains. “Since Gananoque is a seasonal town, I’d be working hard in summer and scraping by in the winter.”

“Teleport, because I’m always late for everything.”

“I’d be working in a restaurant somewhere.”

New Activity Aide Enjoys Helping Others

Neel Parikh is a welcome addition to the recreation team at Helen Henderson Care Centre, a popular retirement lodge and long-term care home in the heart of Amherstview.

Known for his bright smile and warm demeanor, Neel has already made a positive impact since he joined the home earlier this year.

“Neel is a hard worker who cares deeply about the people around him,” notes Donna Joudoin, the home’s Activity Director and Neel’s direct supervisor. “He is passionate about keeping people busy either through fun activities or educational sessions. Although he’s only been with our home for a short while, he’s already made a positive impression with our residents, staff and families which is why I felt it was appropriate to feature him as our Staff Spotlight in July.”

Born in India, Neel arrived in Canada a few years ago. He is a recent graduate of St. Lawrence College, Kingston Campus; his studies include Physiotherapy, Recreational Therapy and Autism and Behavioural Science.

“I’m liking it here,” attests the friendly 26-year-old from the family owned and operated home on a warm summer day in late June 2025. “It’s a good place to work.”

Currently dedicated to the home’s secure unit called Reception 3, Neel enjoys working with residents who are suffering from memory loss and confusion. He feels it is an extension of his school placement when he worked in a memory care unit.

“I prefer working with older residents,” he explains. “They have so much life experience to share.”

A resident of Kingston, Neel is enjoying his new life in Canada. He says his goal is to give back to the community and improve people’s quality of life. When he’s not at work, he can be found walking, cooking and socializing.

Asked to describe himself, he says he is easy to approach and smiles a lot because he’s happy, despite missing his family back in India.

“It was a hard decision to come here,” the young man admits. “But in my mind, it was a choice to improve my quality of life.”

Questions for Neel

If you could rule the world, what would you do on day one?

“I would give free dining to everyone. Eating at restaurants has become more expensive since I arrived in Canada a few years ago.”

If you could have superpower, what would it be?

“It would be nice to have the power to heal.”

If you weren’t at your current job, what would you be doing?

“I would like to be a researcher in recreational therapy because good data helps improve people’s quality of life. I like to be around data. I even published an article while attending St. Lawrence College.”

GSS Student Wins Prestigious Nursing Scholarship

A student at Gananoque Secondary School (GSS) is one step closer to becoming a nurse, thanks to the generosity of a family business in Gananoque.

Alexis O’Connor of Gananoque was presented with the Gibson Family Health Care Nursing Scholarship at her graduation ceremony on June 27. The friendly teenager is enrolled in Bachelor of Nursing at Carleton University this September. The bursary will be applied directly to her tuition and fees.

Speaking for Gibson Family Heath Care which owns and operates Carveth Care Centre in Gananoque and Helen Henderson Care Centre in Amherstview, Brett Gibson notes, “We wanted to create a scholarship to help local students pursue their education in nursing. Our family is very happy we can help Alexis become a nurse. We wish her all the best in her pursuit of her degree.”

Started in 2023, the Gibson Family Health Care Nursing Scholarship is a $2,000 education bursary presented annually to a graduate of GSS who is entering a nursing program (Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse) at the university or community college level. To qualify for the award, recipients must have a grade average of 65 or higher. The recipient is selected by a committee of residents and staff at Carveth Care Centre, a family owned and operated retirement lodge and long-term care home in Gananoque.

In her application, Alexis says she witnessed firsthand the hard work and dedication of nurses after a close family member became ill several years ago.

“This inspired me to pursue a career in nursing,” she explains. “Another reason I want to be a nurse is from the experience I gained working and completing my co-op at a retirement home where one of my most memorable shifts was in the memory care unit when a musician entertained the residents. One of the residents, who is usually shy and quiet, got up and started dancing with me.”

Already certified in first aid, safe food handling and a concussion workshop, Alexis knows the next few years are going to be challenging.

“I know nursing school won’t be easy,” she confirms. “However, it’s sentimental moments like this that helped me realize I couldn’t imagine myself committing to any other career for the rest of my life.”

Gananoque woman spends retirement helping others

Sitting in her recliner chair by a window that overlooks a garden full of spring blooms, Peggy Wiechno is enjoying purpose and meaning in retirement.

A resident of Carveth Retirement Lodge, the 93-year-old smiles brightly talking about the almost 400 pairs of mittens she has made for local children since moving to the home one—year ago last April.

“I knit a pair a day,” says the friendly woman in May 2025. “I’ve been knitting all my life. Up until recently, it was matching hats and mittens. Now, I just knit mittens for daycares and schools. My church even sends them to a children’s hospital in Moosonee.”

Sitting in her comfortable room surrounded by pictures of her family and friends, Peggy reflects fondly on her life. She was born in Lansdowne where she lived until 1963 when she bought and opened Tedford’s Lakeside Lodge with her late husband. After her husband’s death, she sold the lodge and remarried. She moved into Carveth Retirement Lodge shortly after the death of her second husband.

Peggy is a world traveler who has been to 41 countries. She has three children, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter.

Asked about living in the retirement lodge, she notes, “It’s fine. I can’t believe how the year has gone. I’m happy to be here. I’m happy in general. You just have to be interested in things. I still love to read and enjoy music.”

Opening the middle drawer of her dresser that is filled with beautiful mittens with intricate designs and colours, she says, “When this middle drawer is full, I find a home for them. I think my knitting is an addiction at this point. It’s a real labour of love.”

In addition to her knitting, Peggy has also helped the community in other ways. In 2014, she won the Senior’s Achievement Award for her years of dedication, hard work and contributions to the Brockville Annual Snowsuit Campaign.

Peggy’s humility and kindness shine through in every conversation.

“The other people who were honoured that day were doing such great work. My contributions seemed so trivial compared to what they did,” she says humbly.

Amherstview Woman Poised to Turn 100 This June

Living through the Great Depression was a life-changing event for Joyce Nicol.

Poised to turn 100 on June 19, 2025, Joyce talks about that time in history as the most significant event in her life.

Speaking from Helen Henderson Care Centre in late May 2025, a long-term care home in Amherstview where she has lived for one-month, the friendly woman admits, “It feels good to be turning 100. I’m still alive. I lived through the Great Depression which was tough. It was hard to get food because we didn’t have any money. We were always hungry.”

Joyce was born on June 19, 1925 in Brantford. When she was a child, she moved to Kingston with her parents so her father could work as a penitentiary guard.

“I remember one Christmas when we didn’t have anything,” she says nostalgically about her childhood. “My father was offered $10 to be a witness at a hanging on Christmas eve. He attended and we had a good Christmas that year.”

A significant period, The Great Depression was the longest and deepest downturn in the history of North America and the modern industrial economy. It lasted more than a decade, beginning in 1929 and ending during World War II in 1941. Interestingly, the slogan most commonly associated with the Great Depression era is "Brother, can you spare a dime?" This phrase encapsulates the despair and the pleading for assistance that was prevalent during this time of economic hardship.

“During the depression, no one worked,” attests Joyce who was only four years old when it started. “Everyone was poor in those days.”

Several years after moving to Kingston, Joyce found work at SEARS, a wine store and an aluminum plant where she met her husband who was an electrician. The couple went on to have three children and Joyce filled her time painting and sewing.

“I used to make some of my own clothes and my children’s clothes,” she says proudly. “I loved cooking and baking.”

Home Embraces the Healing Power of Animals

If laughter is the best medicine, the healing power of animals is second best.

That is the sentiment of residents at Carveth Care Centre in Gananoque, a retirement lodge and long-term care home that benefits from regular visits from therapy animals.

“The visiting dogs at Carveth Care Centre offer numerous benefits to our residents and staff,” explains Shannon Buell, Activity Director at the home. “They help reduce stress and loneliness, and provide much needed comfort. When the dogs visit, everyone smiles. The animals are deeply loved, and when they come into the home, we often greet them with treats and snuggles - to the point where we often forget about the handlers. We are so thankful for them, too. It’s heartwarming to see a resident who hardly responds to people, bend down and pet the dogs while saying I love you.”

Known for innovative programs such as reindeer visits at Christmas and petting zoos during Family Fun Days, the popular home is poised to celebrate National Animal Therapy Day on April 30.

A regular visitor to the home is Bill McCormick and his animals from Sheba’s Haven who have been coming to the home for 10 years.

“Our pets are palliative and special needs and can identify with some of the residents,” says Bill with a smile. “They love to share their love with the people of Carveth, whether they are a resident, staff, or a resident’s family member. When we had a dog in a wheelchair, some of the residents could relate to it. We also have dogs in diapers, some are blind and deaf. These visits also help our dogs socialize outside of their home, and those with cognitive issues get the stimulation they need.”

When Bill and his animals arrive at the home, there is a gravitational pull to interact with them.

“People are attracted to my pets,” he confirms. “They want to pet them, hug them and spoil them. I notice that everyone sees the kids at the end of the leash, but can't see me at the other end, which is understandable. I probably wouldn't see me either with them around. When we walk around Carveth, the animals bring smiles to faces, and the residents talk and interact with us. Most times they will sit there and gently pet one of my dogs who is sitting on their lap while we sit and talk about things. While walking through Carveth, I don't hurry because there are too many people who want to pet the dogs and talk with us. This brings me joy.”

Karel Horemans has been bringing his dog, Elsa, to the home for more than six years. He says sharing his dog brings him endless joy.

“Elsa absolutely loves interacting with the residents,” says Karel. “She gets excited about coming into the building and sings on the way in. She is gentle and carefully takes treats from the seniors. She knows when to stand quietly beside a bed or wheelchair, and will jump up to greet someone who can't reach down. She is soft and huggable, and will give a paw or speak if the resident requests. I love my dog and realize that sharing her makes me feel proud that Elsa's super power is loving others. All that said, she is a beautiful dog with big brown eyes who brings a smile to all who see her.”

Karel sees the benefits of animal therapy for both residents and staff when visiting the home.

“Elsa makes everyone smile,” he explains. “The staff will stop and greet her with a smile because nobody is allowed to walk past without petting her. I have heard many residents say it makes their day or that the visit with Elas cheered them up. The truth is, I am secondary in this team and most people only know Elsa and I am happy with that.”

Another regular visitor to the home for the last four years is Tom Haney with his dog, Jake, who he calls special.

“I have almost always had a dog and luckily they have all been good dogs, but Jake is the best,” says Tom. “Jake is loyal, calm and really lives to please. He loves to go for walks, playing with his basketball and going for rides in the car; he especially loves meal times. He knows his routines and is always excited about visiting Carveth. The fact that Marcie is always on hand with a milk bone may have something to do with it.”

Asked about the impact Jake’s visits have on the residents, Tom notes, “Jake lights up the room simply by walking in, whether it’s a common or individual space. He is very tolerant of all the residents and is pretty good at licking the hands that stroke him which is pretty much the norm. Both Jake and I feel good after every visit.”

What do you do at Carveth and how long have you worked here?

As a Physiotherapist Assistant at Carveth Care Centre, I've had the experience of supporting our physiotherapy team in providing care to residents. Over the past two years, I've assisted with various exercises and therapies helping residents recover from chronic pain, prevent osteoarthritis, improve mobility and achieve activities of daily living.

What is your favourite part of your day/job?

The favourite part of this job is witnessing the small smiles post therapy that feel like achievement. Seeing a resident's face light up with pride after being able to walk again after six years of being bedridden, makes me want to work harder. Last, but not least, every other resident has an experience or a life lesson to share. I love listening to them.

What made you want to get into this line of work?

A couple of years ago, I came across the idea of ‘healing without medicine’ which made me want to strive in the field of physiotherapy. As it's not just getting rid of the pain, but working on the core reason causing the problem.

What do you recommend to people to stay healthy?

As a PTA, I recommend incorporating simple exercises into your daily routine such as stretching, short walks, maintain good posture and always listen to your body. This can help prevent injuries, improve mobility, and boost overall well-being.

This Activity Aide Is Creating a Healthier, Happier and More Vibrant Future

Speaking with Rosie Posca is like standing in a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day.

Full of energy and passion, she talks with happiness and enthusiasm about her work helping residents in long-term care.

“I’m always excited to come to work,” says the friendly woman with sincerity that can be felt. “When the residents’ faces light-up, that’s my reward. Getting them to smile is incredible.”

A part-time Activity Aide at Helen Henderson Care Centre in Amherstview for the past two years, Rosie recently moved into a full-time position at the popular family owned and operated home. “It’s a challenge for me,” she says about the change. “But I love challenges.”

Of the dozens of programs and activities she hosts and supports, her favourites are drumfit, yoga, walking and dancercise. “My passion is movement,” she explains. “I like to motivate people and help them understand they are capable of anything. My goal is to help the residents smile, laugh and engage with other residents. I want to see them happy throughout the day. I want them to know they are loved and cared for.”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Activation Director Donna Joudoin notes, “Rosie has been a wonderful addition to the recreation team; she brings different skills which is very positive. Using her physical background, she has implemented new and exciting programs for residents such as yoga, dancercise, and an exercise with numbers program. Rosie focuses on well being and health which helps residents maintain independence. We are grateful for her time and talent, both of which brighten our day.”

Mother of two and grandmother of one, Rosie describes herself as a seasoned wellness coordinator who is deeply committed to fostering positive change and holistic well-being within individuals and communities.

“With a diverse background in health promotion, nutrition, and lifestyle coaching, I specialize in designing and implementing innovative wellness programs tailored to meet the unique needs of diverse populations,” she says. “My approach is rooted in evidence-based practices and a profound understanding of the interconnectedness between physical, mental, and emotional health. I thrive on collaborating with teams to create environments that prioritize wellness, productivity, and employee satisfaction. Through my strategic leadership, I have successfully spearheaded initiatives that have significantly improved employee engagement, reduced absenteeism, and enhanced overall organizational culture. Driven by a genuine passion for empowering others, I excel in cultivating meaningful relationships and fostering a supportive environment where individuals can thrive.”

Appearing happy and content in late March 2025, Rosie admits, “I am who I am, and I love it. I think movement is extremely important for a healthy lifestyle and I believe you should be fit your entire life. My motto is movement is everything. It’s a pleasure to use my past skills to create magic here. I call it magic because that’s how I feel when I see the residents come alive.”

Residential Aide Lauded for Hard Work

For Josephine Dosado, a problem is a chance to do her best.

“I love it so much,” says the friendly woman about her job helping residents at Carveth Retirement Lodge in Gananoque. “It’s like my calling. I enjoy helping them to resolve their issues and assisting them with their daily living activities. I’m just doing my best.”

Speaking from the family owned and operated home in early March 2025, the 49-year-old smiles at the news she is the home’s Employee of the Month for April. She arrived in Canada from the Philippines in 2003 and has worked at the lodge for almost one year as a Residential Aide.

“Josephine is very friendly, dependable and extremely dedicated to her job,” attests Lodge Manager, Phyllis Lorbetskie. “She gets along with everyone; she’s a treasure.”

Visibly pleased with the feedback, Josephine won the workplace award for her hard work and helpful nature.

“The best part of my job is listening to the residents,” the friendly woman confirms. “Most of them want to talk to someone and I love to listen. It’s uplifting.”

A resident of Gananoque for the past two years, Josephine only has one regret about moving to Canada. “My one regret is winter,” she says with a laugh. “But the place is really nice.”

Asked to describe herself, she uses words such as hardworking and patient. When she’s around the residents, she likes to talk. She is the proud owner of a Yorkie named Cheeko, a pet that serves as Josephine’s therapy. “If I’m stressed, tired or sad - he makes me happy,” she says with a grin.

When she’s not at work, Josephine can be found playing Sudoku, gardening or cooking. “I’m not an outgoing person,” she replies when asked about her hobbies. “I don’t like shopping, and I don’t like crowded places. I don’t know why, but that’s me.”

Grateful for her time at the lodge with the residents and staff, Josephine notes, “I find it fun here. I even like to stay a little longer so I can do more with them. I love my job.”

Questions for Josephine

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

“I want to give everyone a job. I don’t want to see people starving. I came from a Third World Country, and I’ve seen a lot of hungry children.”

If you could rule the world, what would you do on day one?

“I’d stop the wars; just love no hatred. No discrimination. We’ll start from there.”

If you weren’t at your current job, what would you be doing?

“I wanted to be a medical technologist, but I couldn’t afford the schooling. I love my job, now.”

Dieticians Help Residents Eat Good, Feel Good

Two local long-term care homes are using March to celebrate the power and importance of nutrition.

A Registered Dietitian at Carveth Care Centre in Gananoque and Helen Henderson Care Centre in Amherstview, Elizabeth Dares-Dobbie is preparing for National Nutrition Month - a one-month awareness campaign that highlights the profound connections between food and overall well-being, and emphasizes the transformative role of nutrition in our lives.

“I like the theme Nourish to Flourish, and I like that it’s for two years,” says the woman who has worked at the two homes for more than 10 years. “Food can nourish more than just our bodies—it nourishes our minds, our emotions, and our overall well-being.”

An expert in geriatric nutrition, Elizabeth is the only dietitian at Helen Henderson Care Centre and one of two Registered Dietitians at Carveth Care Centre. Both homes are using National Nutrition Month to recognize and celebrate the diverse roles dietitians play in influencing the well-being of Canadians and their integral part of the health care system. Registered Dietitians are regulated health professionals who use their expertise in food and nutrition to improve human health.

“The dining experience is important for our residents,” explains Elizabeth in late February 2025. “Meals add structure to the day and are social times. They are also three of the six daily opportunities for residents to obtain hydration which is important for everyone, especially the elderly.”

Armed with a wealth of knowledge and experience, Elizabeth enjoys her work at the homes which are seeing trends. “A lot of people are looking for healthy diet options. They are expecting it now in long-term care,” she attests. “They want to know the best things they can eat. In addition to menu planning, dietitians are looking at how can we help people who have chronic disease through medical nutritional therapy.”

Louise Dorsett has been a dietitian at Carveth Care Center for 10 years. Her knowledge in nutrition therapy comes from years of experience working in many settings and organizations. She’s had the privilege of working in hospitals, primary care centers and for community organizations. She provided nutrition education to infants, toddlers, adolescents, young adults and seniors.

“Our role as dietitians is essential and rewarding. We help them maintain optimal health, manage chronic illnesses and improve their quality of life. Seniors, in long-term care, may face a variety of eating challenges, including loss of appetite, changes in taste and smell, and digestive or swallowing issues. At Carveth the dietary team does their best to create personalized meal plans, provide guidance in making healthy food choices, and offer support to the residents’ loved ones during stressful situations.”

Louise adds, “I am lucky because I have had the privilege of working with clients form all phases of life from infants to 100-year-olds". It makes me appreciate all of the things dietitians can help with. Weight loss is just a small part of what we do. We also help with food security, programs for the underprivileged, assisting with the treatment of chronic diseases and promoting public health messages to name a few specialties.”

Louise says, “This year’s theme Nourish to Flourish truly resonates with the needs of our residents: It was chosen to highlight the connection between food and our health and well-being.”

Millhaven Woman Retires After 36 Years

Connie Jensen might be retiring from her job, but she isn’t retiring from her passion to help others.

Speaking from Helen Henderson Care Centre where she has worked for the past 36 years as a support worker in a health care setting, her face is kind, and her laugh is genuine when she talks about her life and career, both of which are about to change when she retires on March 1, 2025.

“It’s scary,” Connie confesses from Helen Henderson Care Centre, a retirement lodge and long-term care home in Amherstview. “I’ve done the same thing for a long time: get up, dress and come to work. It’s going to be strange when this routine comes to an end. I’m going to miss everyone. This is my second home; the residents and staff are my second family. It doesn’t mean I won’t come to visit…. I guess I’m trying to say that it’s scary, but exciting.”

A resident of Millhaven, Connie plans to fill her free time with chores and projects. She also plans to spend more time at the arena watching her grandson play hockey, and with her mother.

The proud mother of four children, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren, Connie describes the source of her hardworking nature, “My mom is 83 and still works as a nurse. She’s planning to retire with me. I’m going to spend more time with her.”

Interestingly, Connie’s grandmother lived to 101 and her father-in-law didn’t retire until he was 90. Her husband, 70, is still working and extremely supportive of Connie.

Recalling her first day on the job, Connie notes, “When I first started washing dishes at Helen Henderson Care Centre, I was making $7 an hour. Over the years, the home has changed considerably. The place has grown, and departments have moved around.”

What hasn’t changed is Connie’s kind and helpful nature. Smiles reflect the happiness and pleasure she finds in a day; frowns are from the care and concern she feels for her family. Her face shows the difficult decision she is facing - she is torn between staying with a work family that she loves or moving on to a new chapter in her life.

She smiles when talking about the workplace she has enjoyed for the past 36 years, a place that is home to many of the milestones in her life such as her marriage in the chapel, baby shower and three boxes of desserts presented by a coworker for her daughter’s wedding.

“I’ve lost some good friends here, but I have also found friends who will last a lifetime,” she says nostalgically.

The 64-year-old laughs describing how she washed dishes until she was eight months pregnant. “My arms couldn’t reach after that,” she says with a chuckle.

In the end, it might be her body that overrides her willpower to stay in a place that has been such an important part of her life. Appearing slightly uncomfortable talking about herself, Connie admits, “I need double knee surgery. I have had arthritis since I was a kid. I’m on the waiting list and can’t wait to have it done. I love to dance. Right now, it’s kind of hard.”

Walking with a slight limp the back of the kitchen for a picture in her workstation, Connie notes with her trademark smile, “I’m on my third dishwasher. Before I go, I want a sign placed on my dish room door that says Connie’s Office.”

“It’s hard to imagine the kitchen without Connie, she’s made such a huge contribution in so many ways,” says Shaun Stephenson, Connie’s supervisor and the home’s Food Service Nutrition Manager. “Although we’ll all miss Connie, it’s nice to see her have this well-deserved break.”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Administrator Lisa Gibson adds, “Connie will be greatly missed at Helen Henderson by both residents and staff as she has been a piece of the fabric that has made our home a home for 36 years. I hope she enjoys her well-deserved retirement with her family, that she is so proud of, and can take time for herself to continue to do the things that she loves.”

Painting Dreams in Long-Term Care

Ernie Wattie dreams of painting, and then paints his dream.

Sitting in his room at Carveth Care Centre, a long-term care home in Gananoque where he has lived for the past four months, the friendly 79-year-old smiles while talking about his love of painting.

“I painted a picture for every member of my family for Christmas,” he says with pride on a cold winter day in early January 2025. “I learned to paint in high school. I’ve been doing it as a hobby for about 30 years, now.”

Proud of his work, Ernie points to the colourful pictures on his walls painted by him and one of his three daughters.

“I’ve done a lot of camping, backpacking and stuff,” says Ernie about the scenes of nature he likes to depict. “I have probably painted more than 50 pictures in my lifetime. I’m just getting ready to paint something else; I usually have an idea in the back of my mind.”

Pleased with Ernie’s hobby, Activation Director Shannon Buell notes, “It’s nice to see Ernie continue his passion for painting in long-term care. It’s a pleasure to watch him create these beautiful works of art.”

Originally from Cornwall, Ernie retired as an industrial electrician foreman. He has three children, five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. At Carveth Care Centre, he likes to spend his time reading, painting and participating in activities; he also enjoys photography.

Asked about his time at the home, Ernie replies quickly, “It’s A1. I like it here; I’m treated well.”

“I find painting very relaxing,” he explains about one of his favourite pastimes.

Meet the Care Coordinator at Helen Henderson Care Centre

Meet the managers at Helen Henderson Care Centre series...

Faith McGee loves advocating for people who are vulnerable.

Speaking from Helen Henderson Care Centre where she has worked as a Care Coordinator for the past four years, Faith is a voice of compassion for the 104 residents in long-term care.

“I really love what I do,” explains the friendly 44-year-old from her office at the popular family owned and operated home in mid-January 2025. “I feel like I’m making a difference in this role. Some days are more stressful than other, but all-in-all, the work is meaningful and fulfilling.”

As the home’s Care Coordinator, Faith is responsible for Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC), building care plans and tracking the health care needs of residents (RAI), and acting as the lead for Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO).

The work is a stark contrast to the six years she spent working on the floor as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN).

“Every day is different as a frontline health care professional,” Faith explains about her easy transition to Care Coordinator. “This role is perfect because I can still go from one thing to another, every day is different.”

Laughing at the idea of enjoying constant change, she notes, “I don’t know why, but it’s how my brain works. I like to challenge myself; I feel like I have accomplished something.”

The proud mother of two young children, Faith likes to spend her free time with her husband and children. She also is studying to advance from an RPN to Registered Nurse (RN).

“I’m working on my getting my RN degree,” she confirms.

Looking back at her work as Care Coordinator, Faith says with an easy smile, “I’m pretty proud of what I’ve accomplished, here. I feel like I’m implemented a lot of changes since I entered this role such as creating a new digital Treatment Assessment Record and moving to three levels of care.”

Visibly modest, Faith doesn’t mention how well the home is managing a respiratory outbreak declared a few days before this interview, and still in place.

“I know we’ll be okay,” she says without hesitation. ““Our staff are really good about what to do when going into outbreaks and wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Director of Care Sue Reynolds notes, “Long-term care is always changing to ensure the safety of residents. That, along with the best quality of life, is our home’s top priorities: safety and comfort. Faith has jumped in headfirst, into the ever expanding and demanding role of Care Coordinator.”

Reflecting on her role, Faith is excited to be one of the main points of contact in the home.

“I know I can develop a good rapport with our residents’ family members and give them peace of mind through good communication,” she explains. “I’m a liaison - a constant here, and I like to follow-up with residents, family and staff. I see my job as maintaining people’s quality of life and their comfort. Being an advocate and being their voice is what I feel is most important.”

Housekeeper Celebrated at Carveth Care Centre

Cathy Hobbs is as humble as she is kind.

Speaking from the laundry room at Carveth Care Centre where she has worked for the past three years, the friendly woman smiles brightly at the news she is the Employee of the Month for January 2025.

“I love it here,” says Cathy while the heat from the driers warms her back as she folds laundry. Looking happy at her task, she apologizes for not stopping her work while she talks. “I have a system,” she says with a smile, alluding to her workday that works best when it’s not interrupted. “To be successful, you have to have a routine.”

Grateful for this recognition from the home, the 63-year talks about her life before she joined the family-owned retirement lodge and long-term care home in Gananoque. “I worked at Home Hardware for 10 years. Before that, I owned a coffee shop,” she explains. “I enjoyed that work so much, I even opened it for my regular customers on Christmas morning. They were sweet guys.”

After her business closed, Cathy was looking for something new.

“I got the job at Carveth Care Centre by fluke,” she explains. “I was asked to pour coffee, temporarily.”

Although Cathy joined the home as a Dietary Aide, she quickly transitioned into a permanent housekeeping position where she finds satisfaction in laundry and housecleaning.

“I like both,” she says quickly.

“Cathy is a fantastic member of the housekeeping department,” notes Supervisor Mark Campbell. “She’s reliable, friendly and competent. We are deeply grateful to have her here. It’s an honour to celebrate her good work with this award.”

Pleased with the feedback, the 63-year-old Gananoque woman says she enjoys spending time with her mother when she’s not at work.

“There’s not a lot interesting about me,” she says with a chuckle. “I work; I work hard. I’m a team player.”

If you could rule the world, what would you do on day-one?

“I’d end hunger and sickness.”

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

“I’d just like for everyone to be at peace.”

If you weren’t at your current job, what would you be doing?

“I’d still have my coffee shop. I did it until I couldn’t do it. Walking away from it was the hardest thing I have ever done.”

Kingston Nurse Connects with the People in Her Care

Because miracles happen every day, it is best when nurses don’t give up on anybody, especially themselves.

Speaking from Helen Henderson Care Centre, a retirement lodge and long-term care home, Registered Nurse Andrea Schwartz admits she was ready to leave nursing until she found a job that reconnected her with the people in her care.

“I love it,” says the 51-year-old mother of two about her role as charge nurse for the past year at the family owned and operated nursing home in Amherstview. “Coming here from the hospital was the best decision I ever made. Before I arrived, I wasn’t enjoying my career. I was ready to leave nursing, to be honest.”

Grateful for the slower pace that allows her to provide a more holistic approach to the 104 residents in her care, Andrea has never looked back at the hospital job that nearly burned her out.

“You don’t have enough time with the people who are sick,” says the friendly Kingston woman about her old job. “I lost that connection. Coming to long-term care was the best move I ever made. I didn’t know this other world even existed; it’s like working in someone’s home. I’m even enjoying my role as Lead for the Pain and Palliative Care. As busy as it is here, it’s still better than acute care because it’s a different kind of stress. Even the arthritis in my hands has cleared up. I feel very welcomed and accepted here.”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Director of Care Sue Reynolds notes, “Andrea is a kind and compassionate nurse who brings calmness and clarity to our home. Her passion for health care is shown in all aspects of what she does, whether it is interacting with residents, family or staff. Her knowledge and thirst for finding solutions for pain management, and how to navigate end-of-life care, is endless. We feel fortunate to have Andrea as part of our team and I invite other registered nurses to consider the job satisfaction in long-term care.”

When Andrea is not at work, she can be found volunteering with her daughter and husband at McBrien Stables in Westbrook which is home to the family’s new foal.

“I love family time; I’m very much about my family,” she adds. “We do game nights with the kids.”

Interestingly, Andrea’s daughter works in the same home as her mother as a student dishwasher.

“It’s her first real job,” Andrea says with a smile. “It’s very special here and I’m glad Sofia gets to experience that.”

If you weren’t at your current job, what would you be doing?

“I probably would not be nursing anymore. I was at my breaking point. If I wasn’t here, I’d probably be at the barn.”

If you could rule the world, what would you do on day one?

“I’d make sure everyone has a job because it improves a person’s self worth when they can support themselves.”

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

“I would make everyone get along in the world. Nothing drives me crazier than bickering and negativity.”
