Darcy Greenaway is about to embark on the biggest adventure of his life.

A highly accomplished 25-year-old, the former Kingston Frontenac and Queen’s Gael is about to embark on a professional hockey career in Europe.

It is a dream come true for a man who dreams big.

“I’m very excited,” says Darcy during a break from his maintenance work at Carveth Care Centre, an accredited retirement lodge and long-term care home in Gananoque where he has worked for the past five summers.

Born and raised in Wilton, a small community in Loyalist Township, Darcy graduated from economics at Queen’s University in June 2018. He is an alumni of the Ontario Hockey League and a community activist.

Modest about his achievements, the young hockey player is a rising star who made his dreams a reality through sweat, determination and hard work.

“This was my motivation going into the last season (with the Queen’s Gaels Men’s Hockey Team) to work hard and find a job in Europe,” says Darcy who is known for his speed and skill on the ice. “I’m just looking forward to getting over there and having a great experience.”

Headed to the City of Gap located in southeastern France, Darcy will begin his one-year contract with the Ligue Magnus in August.

“It’s the top French pro-league,” he explains. “There is a lot of great leagues over there with a lot of great opportunities.”

Clearly excited about his upcoming adventure, Darcy admits with a smile, “I’ve never been to France.”

What he can expect when he lands on the continent is a bigger ice surface compared to standard ice pads in Canada.

“The European rinks seem to favour speed and skill,” says Darcy. “I hope to bring my skill set over there and use my speed to create offence and maximize my abilities in that league. Using my speed to create offense is how I’m most effective.”

Speaking on behalf of the Queen’s men’s hockey team as Head Coach and Carveth Care Centre as Administrator, Brett Gibson notes, “I have had the opportunity to coach Darcy in the winter and employ him in the summer for the last five years. He has had many on-ice accomplishments over the years, but nothing makes me prouder then to witness his growth as a person. Darcy has matured into a man of great compassion and understanding of what it takes to succeed in life. To be as young as he is and to witness how he interacts with seniors is special. There is not a day that goes by that he does not take the time to reminisce with residents at Carveth Care Centre and ask them how their day is going.”

A popular figure at the home, Darcy regularly volunteers his time on weekends to take residents on special outings. He also stops what he’s doing to discuss hockey with the men who live at the home.

“Playing pro-hockey has always been my dream,” says Darcy kindly. “To finally get this opportunity is exciting. I’m excited to get over there and prove myself. I’m looking forward to it. I can’t wait.”

Carveth Care Centre is grateful for the hard work and kindness of Darcy Greenaway. Our residents and staff wish him the best of luck with his professional hockey career. To learn more about living or working in our home, please call 613-382-4752.
