An official review by Accreditation Canada of a long-term care home in Amherstview is full of good news.
“We’re delighted with the recent review by Accreditation Canada,” said Angela Gibson, Assistant Administrator of Helen Henderson Care Centre.
Located in Amherstview, the home was inspected by two surveyors June 6 & 7. Helen Henderson Care Centre earned a score of 96 per cent which is close to exemplary. This means it meets or exceeds the provincial standards of long-term care.
“You have done exceedingly well,” said Senior Surveyor Linda Hanford. “These are pretty strong results. You can be very proud of them. You have a very secure building. Your new nurse call bell system is a real strength.”
Accreditation Canada reviewed 14 priority processes pertaining to residents risk and safety.
“You have a real appetite for quality improvement,” noted Hanford. “You guys are also a wonderful community citizen; second to none. Something you can rightly be proud of.”
The surveyors told the home:
  • It has a caring and committed staff and good physical space.
  • It has a strong sense of team and strong community presence.
  • Medication management is very well done.
  • It has an excellent disaster plan and strong partnerships.
  • There is clear fiduciary understanding.
  • It has comprehensive education and learning plans.
  • There is strong leadership engagement across all departments.
  • Infection control is well done.
“You have a high professional collaboration,” said Surveyor Mimie Carroll.
“You can see you’ve done very well and you need to be very proud of the work you’ve done,” added Hanford.

Speaking on behalf of the home, Gibson noted, “Helen Henderson Care Centre is working hard to be the best retirement lodge and long-term care home in the country. This rating is the result of a lot of hard work by staff who are passionate about the health and safety of the people in their care. We are delighted to have our work validated and celebrated. It’s a pleasure to hear this confirmation.”
“Staff is committed to delivering the best health care in the country” added Sue Reynolds, Director of Care. “Every department strives for excellence while making kindness and compassion a priority. We are proud of the care we deliver here and will continue to do the best job possible.”
Speaking to residents and staff before departing on June 8, Hanford said thoughtfully, “Love drives your business and we can do business in a loving way.”
