A retirement home in Amherstview is showcasing its award-winning programs and services at an open house this Saturday.

Helen Henderson Retirement Lodge, an accredited retirement home owned and operated by Gibson Family Health Care, is opening its doors to the public on Saturday, June 1 from 1 to 4 pm.

Featuring a delicious BBQ, Helen Henderson Retirement Lodge Spring Open House includes live entertainment by Mark from AMBUSH. Admission is free and open to everyone.

“We hope the community takes advantage of this opportunity to tour our retirement lodge and meet our friendly staff,” says Angela Gibson, Assistant Administrator.

“The Spring Open House is a great way to taste the delicious food prepared in our kitchen and enjoy the spectacular entertainment we have on a regular basis. As a family run business, we truly understand the importance of family and meeting the needs of each individual.”

Managers and team members will be on-hand to guide visitors through the layout to fully appreciate the living space such as the dining room, common areas, activity rooms, living quarters and more.

Guests can meet Mildred King who lives at Helen Henderson Retirement Lodge. Smiling on a warm afternoon in May, Mildred admits she loves her full and active life.

“I’ve been here just over one-month and I feel right at home,” says the friendly 97-year-old. “Everyone has been so attentive, kind and caring. The food has been delicious. I clean-up my plate every meal. I also love the programs here. They have lots of activities.”

Born in Prescott, Mildred grew up in Iroquois where her father worked as a Lock Master on St. Lawrence Lock 25.  After earning her nursing license with her twin sister, the two worked for many years in health care.

“I remember giving a stretcher a push down the hallway at the Peterborough Civic Hospital which was a bit run-down at the time,” she says about a work-incident. “When the stretcher hit the wall, the wall fell down. I had all that plaster to sweep-up before I went off duty.

“I had a lot of fun,” Mildred says about her career that ended in retirement in 1980.

Mildred appreciates the care and support she receives at the home, including the convenience of having everything on one-level. Her mother lived in the same lodge in 1987.

“This open house is a perfect time to drop-in and discover an environment that meets your current requirements as well as your future needs,” says the Assistant Administrator “We want the community to see what makes Helen Henderson Retirement Lodge special. Come home to Helen Henderson and let our family care for your family.”
