Cassandra Cornelius hopes this New Year will bring better fortune than 2021.

Talking about the past year during a break at Helen Henderson Care Centre where she has worked for the past 10 years as a Personal Support Worker (PSW), the 30-year-old Napanee woman describes the past year as difficult due to the pandemic and other hardships.

“I’m so done with 2021. I can’t handle it anymore,” she says with sincerity. “I don’t know how I’m still standing. I should be down-and-out. This year has wiped me out.”

A valued staff at the home who is known for her resilience, Cassandra’s New Year may already be looking up because she is the Employee of the Month for January 2022.

Appearing pleased with the workplace award she received for providing assisted daily living to 104 residents in long-term care, she replies quickly when asked about her job, “I love it here. I like the staff and really enjoy working with my residents. I look at it as their home and I try to make their day better with a smile and by creating a safe and comfortable environment.”

Cassandra says she enjoys all aspects of her work.

“I like all of it,” she confirms. “I like to be here for my residents. I like to be their voice. I especially like to work on Reception Three which specializes in dementia and Alzheimer’s.”

Speaking on behalf of the family owned and operated home, Assistant Director of Care Melissa Locke notes, “Cassandra is a strong woman and a strong PSW in the home. She is an asset training new staff and understands what it truly means to be a PSW. She is wonderful with the residents, family and staff alike.”

When she’s not at work, Cassandra enjoys spending time with family, reading or fishing in the summertime.

“I’m more a homebody than a going-out-person,” she says with a laugh.

Asked to describe herself, she uses words such as easygoing and laidback. “I’m a people person. I’m talkative when you get to know me. I also like to stand-up for what I believe in,” she explains.

Cassandra sees herself working at the home for the rest of her life.

“I’m a lifer here as a PSW,” she says. “I love what I do and I don’t want to change that.”
