Valerie Kimmett is not your average Personal Support Worker.

When she’s not helping residents at a long-term care home in Amherstview, she’s riding her horse and training for barrel racing and pole bending competitions such as the World’s in Georgia this fall.

“I’m excited about it, but I don’t like to brag about it because there are other people in the area who are going,” she says about this significant accomplishment.

A resident of Camden East, Valerie is the Employee of the Month for June at Helen Henderson Care Centre, a long-term care home where she was worked since 2008.

“I like my job because it allows me to have a relationship with the residents,” she says kindly. “This home is special, and the staff keep me going.”

Valerie is married with three children (two surviving). She has three grandchildren and likes to ride her horse (western style) in her spare time.

“I’m usually travelling the roads on the weekends, but I won’t be doing that as much this year because of the high price of gas,” she explains.

Known for her willingness to cover shifts for other staff, Valerie notes, “I try to help people out who need a Saturday off. I know how difficult it can be to find someone to work.”

Speaking on behalf of the home, Director of Care Sue Reynolds notes, “Val is an extraordinary team member who goes out of her way to ensure the residents emotional, physical, and spiritual needs are met; she puts the residents first. She is always there to help her co-workers with a smile and a positive attitude.  We are very happy to have Val as part of our amazing team.”

Asked to describe herself, Valerie replies, “I don’t know…I think I am easy to get along with.”

When she’s not at work, she can be found riding her two horses, and spending time with her grandchildren at the cabin.

“I’m quite happy,” she says gently.

Questions for Valerie

If you could rule the world, what would you do on day-one?

Right now, I’d lower the gas prices and make every politician pay for their own gas and bills. I’d also stop countries from invading others.

If you had any superpower, what would it be?

“Well, it would start with having my boy back. I could think of a lot of things. But......”

If you weren't at your current job, what would you be doing?

“I’d be riding more horses, spending more time with my grandkids and hanging out at the cabin.”
