New PSW recognized for good work Featured
A new Personal Support Worker (PSW) at Helen Henderson Care Centre in Amherstview is making a good first impression.
Speaking from the long-term care home in May 2024, Shaya Cameron smiles brightly when informed she is the home’s Employee of the Month for June after only three months of work.
“I like the environment and atmosphere here,” says the 39-year-old Collins Bay woman who is married with children and a dog named Jerry Bear. “The staff has been more than welcoming.”
As a fairly new graduate, Shaya has only worked as a PSW for three years. Before that, she worked in building maintenance. She joined the team at Helen Henderson Care Centre in March 2024.
“I enjoy the work,” she says about the health care field. “It was a gravitational pull into this line of work. I find it fulfilling and a very good fit with my interests and skillset.”
Speaking on behalf of the home, Director of Care Sue Reynolds notes, “Shaya is a wonderful addition to our nursing team. She goes about her shifts in a quiet, but positive way, with a smile on her face. Shaya’s interactions with the residents are wonderful to observe. She is kind, patient and brings out so much to them with each contact. We are truly fortunate to have Shaya as part of our amazing team.”
Shaya appreciates the feedback on her performance. When she’s not at work, she likes to spend time with her family and relax at home. She grew up riding horses on a farm outside of Bath.
Asked to describe herself, she notes. “I’m quiet and easy going; I’m a homebody. I like to make people happy, and I like to treat people how I want to be treated.”
