Amherstview Woman Turns School Placement Into Fulfilling Job
A Personal Support Worker (PSW) has won her first workplace award.
Rajdeep Kaur smiles at the news she is the Employee of the Month at Helen Henderson Care Centre, a popular retirement lodge and long-term care home in Amherstview where she has worked as a PSW for the past seven months.
“I did my placement here when I was attending St. Lawrence College,” explains the friendly 30-year-old. “I like it here and I’m grateful the home gave me an opportunity after placement.”
Known for her reliability and friendliness, Rajdeep is currently studying to become a Registered Practical Nurse. She arrived in Canada from India in 2017 to study business administration. She is currently juggling work, nursing school and the care of her 18-month-old son.
“It’s been great,” says the Amherstview woman about her time in Canada. “I like it so far.”
Rajdeep joins her sister in the Nursing Department which provides frontline health care to 104 residents in long-term care. She says she appreciates the staff unity and good teamwork.
Speaking on behalf of the home, Assistant Director of Care Melissa Locke notes, “Raj has been a wonderful addition to the team. She has a calm quiet confidence about her. Residents and staff alike enjoy her friendly company when she is here. “
Asked to describe herself, Rajdeep says she has a loving nature and enjoys visiting new places and trying new food.
“I keep busy with my little boy,” she says with a smile. “Once school is finished, I would like a daughter.”
Rajdeep’s dream include returning to India every few years with her family to enjoy the food and celebrations.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
“I’d like learning to come easy for my future.”
If you could rule the world, what would you do on day one?
“I would spend the first day with my husband and son. We don’t get many days off work together.”
If you weren’t at your current job, what would you be doing?
“I love my job. If I wasn’t here, I’d be working somewhere else in health care.”
